Sugar plums are a type of Italian plum in the genus Prunus that also includes cherries, peaches, and apricots. These plums are soft and succulent with an exceptionally high sugar content with virtually no acidity in both the skin and flesh. Sugar plums are mostly commonly dried to make prunes or used to make alcohol such as plum wine (umeshu) but they are also phenomenal eaten raw. These plums pair exceptionally well with warm spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and chilies.
Uses: Raw sugar plums are excellent as a snack or topping for desserts. Dehydrate sugar plums to make delicious prunes. Sugar plums make incredible jams, preserves, and pastes.
